Yamaha Ray, an all-new offering, was launched on 14 September 2012, in Hyderabad, India amidst high fanfare. This scooter carries with it high expectations from scooter lovers all over the world. With this, Yamaha Bikes marks an entry into the highly competitive scooter market in India. Deepika Padukone, a highly successful bollywood actress has been appointed its brand ambassador.

Yamaha Bikes have spelled out their intentions publicly when it said that it is eyeing 15-20% of the market share by 2016. Yamaha Bikes is aiming to sell at least one million units of the Yamaha Ray by 2014, doubling the figure to two million by 2016. This selling will be aided by its, still in development, factory in Chennai, which is expected to be completed by January 2014. Yamaha has also taken the opportunity to announce that they are looking to make 2.6 million units in the plant by 2018, producing products aimed at customers, both from India and broad.
